Laneway cottage
A detached secondary dwelling that replaces the existing single garage with rear lane access in the Sydney suburb of Petersham. It features ground floor living and dining with a mezzanine bedroom and ensuite.
It has been sensitively designed to address the neighbouring heritage conservation area whilst providing a comfortable living arrangement on its modest footprint. The roof form and upper level window locations limit overshadowing and overlooking of the adjacent main dwelling and neighbouring properties to the south.
It provides housing diversity in a dense inner city suburb and allows intergenerational living without detracting from the original charm and built form of the area. The chosen rear facing brickwork is a nod to the existing character of the street whilst the steel and glass window detailing provides a hint of the contemporary material palette used internally.
